Someone will always be ahead. But that doesn’t mean you’re behind. Because Truth, like always, will set us free. And free women don’t have to measure up to anybody. Not even her.

Review:
Comparison is a huge deal for women. If we don’t compare ourselves to others, we watch others do it for us. For some reason our successes (and failures) in life are often measured in comparison to the others around us. I am guilty of this myself. We are constantly trying to look and see if we “measure up” and it can have serious detrimental effects on us. When our focus turns from God to other people, our sight and direction in life gets blurred, and we aren’t able to see the plans God has for us.

Not that it was entirely a bad thing, but I couldn’t help but view the book as a “how to play nice on the playground” for adults. A lot of the basic lessons taught to children about getting along with others and making friends, were shared in a light more relevant to adults. Guess we never really grow up then huh? While it shared a lot of good tips and advice for changing your behaviors to improve your outlook on life, I wish the book would have spent more time on the heart of the matter.

It’s not easy to go through this life without comparing ourselves to others, especially for women. At the end of the day we need to keep our eyes focused on God, and not allow jealousy and envy into our hearts. When it does, we need to combat it with the truth we’ve received in the scriptures and through prayer. In many ways changing our behaviors can help improve our situations, but we need the Lord’s help to improve our hearts.

Overall the study was a good reminder to take our thoughts captive before we compare ourselves to other and battle with the jealousy that can be deeply routed in ourselves. However, not all people who have success in this life are that way because they pleased God just as not all who struggle have fallen into their circumstances because they displeased God. We have to look into our own hearts and see if we are motivated to please others (ourselves included) or our Heavenly Father.

Age Appropriateness:
This book was geared towards adult women, but I can see value in a group of older women doing this study with younger girls. I think it’s good for girls to know that they aren’t alone with their emotional struggles, and that even adults compare themselves to others and feel selfish sometimes (or a lot). It could be a good discipleship opportunity.
