She quickly figures out that Toran doesn’t appreciate being rescued by a girl any better than Pierce likes being knocked down by one. When Pierce seeks revenge on Ginnie, Toran sets aside his anger and helps her plot a playback prank at Pierce’s house.

Sadly, Ginnie learns that Pierce has a reason for being a bully when she sees his dad drop him to the floor like a ragdoll with one awful blow to the chest. Realizing he’s a boy in big trouble, Ginnie switches gears and decides to be his ally, even if he won’t let her be his friend.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Do you have a dedicated office space and/or a favorite place to write?
I usually write on my laptop on my bed. It’s comfortable and it’s quiet. But I do make adjustments when I am traveling. Sometimes a table and chair—but quite often I like a bed with pillows to brace my back.

When you’re not writing, what are some other fun hobbies you enjoy?
I have 12 kids and 12 grandkids—so I do like to spend time doing things with them. I enjoy scrapbooking—though I haven’t put scrapbook pages together for a while, but I take LOTS of pictures. 😉 My nickname is “Mamarazzi”

Why middle grade?
I love the passion and wisdom of middle graders. They are real and fun and vibrant.

How was this story born in your mind?
When I was 12, two of my friends were being abused in their homes—I didn’t know how to help them. So when I grew up, I became a foster mom because I loved kids and wanted to help them (and felt guilty about not being able to help my friends.) I started writing to keep a promise I made my high school creative writing teacher and decided to combine keeping my promise to write a book with my desire to help and empower kids. So the Ginnie West series was born.

Do you have a personal favorite character?
I am partial to Ginnie—though I love how Tillie and Ginnie help each other be the best people each of them can be.
I love Ginnie’s courage and her desire to try new things and how she doesn’t let doubts and fears get in her way when she wants to try something new.
On the other hand, I love that Tillie is more timid at the beginning of every book, but by the end, she has overcome a fear and found the courage within her to realize she can defeat her fears and change how she looks at things, thereby empowering her and helping her to find success in her life.

What do you hope readers will take away from your writing?
I want kids to realize that they have the power to their own happiness—and while they can’t always control what happens to them—they CAN choose how they respond—and find courage by realizing they have the power within them to reframe trials as opportunities.

Are you able to share what’s next for you?
I am actually working on the fifth book in the Ginnie West series. At the moment it is untitled—but it is shaping up to be a lot of fun. 🙂
