My Review:
Even though I tend to enjoy them, it’s been a while since I’ve dived into some YA reads and this one certainly didn’t disappoint! I admit I’m pretty picky about fantasy reads in general, but the premise of this one intrigued me, and it had a very dystopian feel to it as much as a fantasy. The characters were well developed and the events throughout not only kept the plot moving forward and the pages turning, but gripped my heart even tighter to Laurelin’s plight. I liked that even though Laurelin’s ultimate goal was to help her brother, there were other things thrown at her throughout that continued to challenge her heart and her mission. And also forced her to understand the importance of boundaries. While I can’t relate to Laurelin’s story as a whole, I CAN relate as someone who is often willing to help others to the cost of myself. And learning how to not only put up boundaries but enforce them, is often admittedly a struggle. So being able to relate to Laurelin’s heart while also relating to her need to learn to say “no”, was something that truly captured my heart in this one. I hope a sequel comes out because I thoroughly enjoyed it and would love to see more.
