Title: The Knight in Battered Armor

Author: Brianna Tibbetts

Genre: Middle Grade Fiction

Publishing: Mar 19, 2019 by Redemption Press

About the Book:

Lord Tempesto is a snake in every sense. As a human, he is slimy, deceitful, and manipulative, but when he’s denied what he wants, he transforms into a gigantic, powerful snake. He wants nothing more than to rule the kingdom for himself, and he’ll stop at nothing to get what he wants.

Princess Melina dreams of marrying a knight in shining armor so she can rule her father’s kingdom someday. But when monster Lord Tempesto captures her and threatens to destroy her beloved kingdom if she doesn’t marry him, she has no choice but to submit to the hideous monster’s demands.

James, the son of a knight, hears about Princess Melina’s plight and sets out on the long journey to rescue her. But his own skills aren’t enough to win the fight against such a ruthless monster with strong, sinewy arms, and it takes teamwork between the captive and her rescuer to save the kingdom from the monster for good.

The Knight in Battered Armor shows children of all ages the importance of doing what is right no matter what and not being afraid to protect what is most important.

My Review:

The Knight in Battered armor is an early chapter book with plenty of pictures to still feel like a picture book. It reads like a fairy tale, with the valiant knight going after the ferocious monster to save the princess. What was unique though, was that it was his heart, humility and selflessness that set him apart from the others and not simply his sword-fighting skills. He didn’t save the princess to prove his own superiority but his honest concern for the princess’ well-being.

I would recommend this as a great read-aloud story for bedtime. I’m always a fan of reading time with kids and believe it’s a great way to get them excited about reading on their own. Reading levels can be difficult to attach to books simply because different areas have different ways to classify them, and kids of different ages can be at very different levels. There were certainly a few words that could be trickier for young readers but overall it didn’t appear to be a very difficult read. I thought it was an engaging story and one I believe kids will enjoy.
