Title: The Gift of the Matchmaker
Author: Becca Whitham
Genre: Christmas Novela
Publishing Date: May 6, 2019
Length: 84 pages
About the Book:
After fleeing Russia during the Bolshevik Revolution, Tatiana Roslanoff and her mother reside at The Driskill Hotel in Austin, Texas. Tatiana longs to become an American girl, but her mother lives inside the delusion that her father and brothers – all of whom are dead – are coming any day now to take them back home. Then Tatiana will marry a Russian nobleman – most of who are also dead – chosen by her parents. If Tatiana can match her mother to a man who will take care of her in royal style, perhaps she can then chose her own husband like American girls do. But how do you play matchmaker to your mother when she thinks your father is still alive?
My Review
Not generally one for Christmas stories or novellas, I was pleasantly surprised with just how much I truly enjoyed this little gem. It had a bit of an “Anastasia” feel to it and Tatiana was an easy character to come to like and empathize with. Even though the setting visited the Christmas season, it also could have easily taken place at another time of the year and I really appreciated that. There were several short witty lines found within that had me literally laughing out loud. There were also moments that I felt sadness over the grief that Tatiana and her mother were wrestling with. I personally adore stories that can make the reader feel multiple different emotions while walking away feeling satisfied in the end. Overall I really enjoyed this one and look forward to reading more by the author very soon.
