Title: Teach Me to Love (Brothers of Belle Fourche #1)
Author: Kari Trumbo
Narrator: J Scott Bennett
Genre: Historical Fiction
Publishing Date: Sept 28, 2018 (Audio)
Audio Length: 3hrs 39min
About the Book:
Izzy Lawson has taken her last abuse.
When her husband dies, she has a choice to make: go home and face the family who made her stay with the beast, or head to Belle Fourche to the only friend she has left. The reserve she’s worked so hard to build crumbles in the verdant rolling hills, and in the arms of a man so different from her husband.
Conrad Oleson can’t read, and it’s shamed him for longer than he can remember.
When another teacher shows up on his front step, he’s sure his brother is meddling again. But when Izzy reveals her painful past, he can’t stay away. And if learning to read brings him closer to her, he’ll do about anything for her. Including, teaching her how to love.
Don’t miss this sweet, western, cowboy romance. Can a widow, scarred by her husband, finally get her happily ever after?
This book was originally published in the Timeless Love: Romantic Stories That Span the Ages collection.
My Review:
Wow, this audiobook sucked me in immediately and held me captive straight through to the end! I recently read the second book out of the series first (I know, big mistake), but I enjoyed it and wanted to know where the story began. It wasn’t as connected as I was expecting but the end was certainly helpful for the second book. While many of the characters are the same, the main characters shift to follow a different brother’s love story.
The intensity of the vulnerability displayed by Izzy’s character in this book is sure to strike hard at your emotions. In today’s world you could expect to see Izzy diagnosed with Body Dysmorphic Disorder and possibly Anorexia. What you see in this book is how the abuse Izzy has suffered has deeply wounded her to her core and how Conrad hopes to come alongside her to fight the lies that have been beaten into her mind for years. Whoever says the well-known “sticks and stones” phrase is sadly mistaken. Instead cruel words can become some of the deepest wounds we will ever have. The further I read (listened), the more I desperately hoped that Izzy would find happiness and healing through this story.
I tend to not be a fan of male narrator’s simply because they make the voices of women and children sound annoyingly whiny but I actually enjoyed this narrator’s voice. I felt he managed to speak with the energy and intensity of the story without overacting. He was a great choice for a narrator of this series.
At less than 4 hours long this is a short read, but I still felt satisfied that I was getting a full story out of it. I enjoyed every moment of it and look forward to reading more from the series as it continues.

Great review! I too enjoyed this story. I read this one and the second one and now I’m wanting to find time to read the third book.
Thanks! Hope you can find the time soon 🙂 luckily these are shorter reads but I know TBRs can be quite overwhelming
I need to read more of this author’s novels. I really like them. I just need more time.
Great review, Becca!
We just need one of those watches like Hermione Granger has to turn back the clock and give us more time!
