Happy Monday! The purpose of memorable Monday is to showcase a book that you’ve read in the past and share how/why it has stuck with you.
This week I’m featuring:
Amazon | Goodreads
Still Alice is an emotional journey that takes the reader into the world of early onset Alzheimer’s. You see Alice deteriorate from the woman she once was, filled with all the raw confusion and chaos that goes with it. I have a grandmother who passed away with Alzheimer’s, but due to family drama I missed much of her last years. I only remember seeing her two or three times after she moved into a home that was for Alzheimer’s research. She lived over five hours away so it wasn’t like she was around the corner, but I still wished I could have spent more time with her. Ignorant to what the end of her life was like, I felt compelled to read this book after hearing about it. Alzheimer’s is no joke, and can strike anyone either personally or through a family member. It’s an emotional read, but will certainly develop empathy for those affected by this heart-wrenching disease.
About the Book:
Still Alice is a compelling debut novel about a 50-year-old woman’s sudden descent into early onset Alzheimer’s disease, written by first-time author Lisa Genova, who holds a Ph. D in neuroscience from Harvard University.
Alice Howland, happily married with three grown children and a house on the Cape, is a celebrated Harvard professor at the height of her career when she notices a forgetfulness creeping into her life. As confusion starts to cloud her thinking and her memory begins to fail her, she receives a devastating diagnosis: early onset Alzheimer’s disease. Fiercely independent, Alice struggles to maintain her lifestyle and live in the moment, even as her sense of self is being stripped away. In turns heartbreaking, inspiring and terrifying, Still Alice captures in remarkable detail what’s it’s like to literally lose your mind…
