his encouragement

Happy Thursday! I am blessed to be a part of a group of bloggers who feel led to share a bit of encouragement each week from the Bible. We recognize that the source of our peace, strength, and security in this life comes from Jesus, and we aim to share that with our readers. Plus, when Thursday comes around, we can all use a little encouragement right? I hope that this posting blesses you and that you find strength and peace in the Lord today ❤

This week it’s on my heart to share:

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

~Colossians 3:16

I am currently reading a book about singing and how important worship is through song. I have to say that music holds a very special place in my heart. While I wouldn’t consider myself musical on the talent end, I love listening to it and being able to meditate on the words as I sing or simply listen. When I was a young teenager I would get angry when my parents tried to sensor the music I was allowed to listen to. They would hear the words and get angry, telling me I wasn’t allowed to listen to it anymore. At the time my family wasn’t active in church or anything, but they were still strict over what we were allowed to watch or listen to. I remember arguing that “it’s not the words I care about I just like the beat.” Of course, I knew all the words– but I didn’t really pay attention to what the messages of the songs were. It wasn’t until I was a bit older and discovered the radio station K-LOVE that I started listening to Christian music regularly. Fast forward a few more years, and after I was out on my own and stronger in my walk with the Lord, I realized what a prize we have in Christian music. If I now listen to a song I used to enjoy as a kid, I’m more often shocked because I now focus more deeply on what the words on a song are actually saying.

I am very grateful for solid, Christian music. When the craziness of the world is overwhelming, sitting and meditating on the words in the songs while they calm and help bring peace to my spirit is an amazing feeling. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the things of this life, but having music to turn our eyes to Christ and focus on him is an encouragement that is certain to help you through your week. I know that when I am going through tough times in life, listening to worship music can help lift my spirits. The words help me look to Christ, and the music itself calms my soul and quiets my anxieties. It’s no secret that the world speaks many lies, and we should be focusing on the truths that God’s Word has revealed to us to counteract those lies. Sometimes just knowing the Lord is omnipresent is enough to bring peace to my soul. I am never alone. He hears my cries and is my rock through all the trials I face in this life. It’s a peace I can’t describe to step away from the craziness of life, and to worship the Lord through song in thanksgiving for His love and mercy.

I know this is a bit of a short message this week, but I can’t encourage you enough to think about the music you are listening to. You’ll be amazed to see what listening to only Christian music for a time can do for your spiritual health. This week I will close with the worship song Holy Spirit sung by Kari Jobe because not only is it my favorite, but it speaks truth in a powerful way. “Holy spirit you are welcome here, come flood this place and fill the atmosphere, your glory God is what our hearts long for, to be overcome by your presence Lord.” I hope you take a minute to listen and meditate on this song, and/or sing along with it if you’d like. I hope today’s message a blessing to you today 🙂

  1. My mom used to be real strict about music too. It did drive me crazy. But as I got older and started caring about the words, I realized the music I had been listening to was not very good for my soul. I’m a big fan of Christian music too. You are so right, Becca…it totally helps calm me down. Great post today!!!

  2. Music has been a huge part of my life, and I am so grateful to my parents, especially my mom, for filling our house with beautiful, inspiring, God-centered music. I am continuing that with my own children.

Mom also would volunteer my sister and I to sing at church, especially if the scheduled special music fell through. I have been honored to use my meager musical talents in glorifying the Lord, regularly leading our small congregation in song for divine worship service.

No matter how I am feeling and what I am going through, the Lord always brings to mind a song or hymn that helps lift my spirit. Thank you for sharing this wonderful encouragement, especially for today.
