Title: Hidden Peril
Author: Irene Hannon
Series: Code of Honor #2
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Publishing Date: October 2, 2018

About the Book:

As teenagers, Kristin Dane and her two best friends took a vow to make the world a better place. Twenty years later, she’s fulfilling that pledge through her fair trade shop that features products from around the world. All is well until, one by one, people connected to the shop begin dying.

Detective Luke Carter, new to the St. Louis PD, wants to know why. Before he can answer that question, however, the FBI weighs in and Kristin suddenly finds herself in the middle of international intrigue–and in the sights of the ruthless mastermind behind an ingenious and deadly, scheme. Can this cold-blooded killer be stopped before more people die . . . including Kristin?

Three-time RITA Award-winner and “queen of inspirational romantic suspense” (Library Journal) Irene Hannon doesn’t disappoint in this edge-of-your-seat thriller that will have readers up late as they rush toward the explosive conclusion.

My Review:

Islamic terrorism is a very scary thing in the world right now. The threat of ISIS is constantly present. In Hidden Peril, Kristin Dane thinks she’s aiding refugees with her business, but instead discovers the charity has been infiltrated by terrorists. It’s a long road for the detectives as they attempt to take down the terrorists before they can further their plans.

For me this book focused too much on the romance and not enough on the action. I know this piece is a matter of personal taste. I recognize that it’s hard to fit everything into a single book, but I struggle with romances that hit it off before characters even know each other. This also caused the suspense in the story to be delayed because the beginning of the book was more focused on the budding romance. So for people who prefer the romance to the suspense, I would say this book is more for them. It’s not to say that there isn’t any suspense, but a lot of the action comes later on.

Once the action kicked in, the story started to move much quicker. The danger was imminent and unpredictable. The characters race the clock as they fight to distinguish the threat of terrorism. But as the other side becomes aware of their plans, the danger only seems to escalate. The ending is certainly one to get your adrenaline running.

Hidden Peril is the second book in the Code of Honor series. Although several of the characters are in both books, they could also be read as stand-alone. In the beginning of the book Luke and Kristin meet at the wedding of Trish and Colin, who were the main characters of the first in the series. While it helps for some backstory, I wouldn’t say it’s a requirement to read the books in order.

As I mentioned above I would recommend this book to people who prefer the romance side of romantic suspense. Overall I enjoyed the book and I’m interested to see if the author continues the series.

Rating: 4-Stars-300x57

Age Appropriateness/Content Warnings:

*PLEASE NOTE: This section may contain mild spoilers but I do my best to reveal the difficult and/or triggering content without giving away the story

This story includes multiple murders with some of them being active scenes and others describing them afterward. There is quite a bit of violence throughout. The language is clean and the romance is kept PG. My recommendation is for ages 15 and up.
