Happy Friday!
The book I’m featuring this week is:
Amazon | Goodreads
October 9, 1849
You Can’t cheat death.
I just received my copy of this book and can’t wait to read it! Plus, isn’t that cover art GORGEOUS??
About the Book:
When Darcie and Walter Goodwin hear of a new cholera epidemic sweeping the area, they join the Shakers whose villages seem immune to the disease. It’s meant to be a temporary stay, but Walter is killed in a riverboat accident. With no family and no money, Darcie has little choice but to stay with the Shakers. To complicate matters, she is expecting a baby conceived before she and her husband came to the Shaker village. Marital relationships are considered sinful in this celibate community, putting Darcie in a unique–and lonely–position. Can the arrival of widower Flynn Keller and his headstrong daughter offer Darcie the hope of happiness . . . and family?
Ann H. Gabhart returns to the enigmatic world of the Shakers in this emotional exploration of the power of love and the bond of family.
About the Author:
Ann H. Gabhart grew up on a farm in Kentucky. By the time she was ten she knew she wanted to be a writer. She’s published over twenty novels. She and her husband have three children and nine grandchildren. She still lives on a farm not far from where she grew up. She loves playing with her grandkids, walking with her dog, reading and, of course, writing. Her Shaker books, set in her fictional Shaker village of Harmony Hill in the 1800’s, are popular with readers. The Outsider was a Christian Fiction Book Award Finalist in 2009. Her Heart of Hollyhill books are Small Town, America books set in the 1960’s. Angel Sister, a Rosey Corner book set during the Great Depression, will be followed by Small Town Girl. Now it’s your turn!
Grab the book nearest to you and leave a comment with the first line. To see what First Lines others are sharing this week head over to Hoarding Books.
Sounds like maybe they want to, though. 😉
I’m currently reading The Trail Boss’s Bride and shared that first line over on my blog where I’m also hosting a giveaway. So here I will share the first line of the chapter I’m currently reading:
There were few things more hair-raising than the threat of a cattle stampede in the teeth of a nighttime thunderstorm.
Uh oh, sounds like something big is about to happen!
Fun to see the first line of my book, The Refuge here on The Becca Files on First Line Friday. 🙂 So I grabbed the book nearest me to join in and lucky for me it was another of my own novels, River to Redemption. Not what I’m reading right now, but it was hanging out here on my desk.
Adria Starr didn’t want her mother and little brother to stop breathing the way her father had.
Hmm, sounds like I’m not letting my character cheat death in this one either.
So glad you stopped by! I read River to Redemption last year. Loved it!
“May I take you home from the signing?”
Annie Beiler’s breath hitched, and her gaze shot from the dusty toes of her powder-blue tennis shoes to the drop-dead-gorgeous man standing not three feet in front of her. Unfortunately, his tentative smile wasn’t aimed in her direction.

Sounds like a very interesting read. On my blog, I’m featuring Romancing the Bride by Melissa Jagears. My current read is Becoming Mrs. Lewis by Patti Callahan. Since I’m about to start Chapter 5, I will share the first line from that chapter. “From a hazy woodland sleep, Davy and Douglas’s laughter along with that of the Walsh girls flooded through the open window.” May you enjoy a wonderful weekend.
Thanks for sharing hope you enjoy it!

I’m so late in getting around to everyone! I’m sharing the first lines from When He Found Me by Victoria Bylin:
“Shane Riley yanked his wet Levi’s out of a grimy washing machine, one of twenty or so in a Laundromat straight out of 1992.”
