first line friday

Happy Friday!

The book I’m featuring this week is:

when-you-are-near

Amazon | Goodreads

September 1900
Washington, D.C.

Lizzy Brookstone sat atop her perfectly groomed horse, Longfellow, and waited for her cue.”

I am currently almost done reading this book and enjoying it so far. It just released earlier this month through Bethany House. I’ll be sharing my full review in a few weeks as part of a tour with CelebrateLit so you’ll have to come back to check it out 🙂

About the Book:

After her father’s death, Lizzy Brookstone, the star trick rider of the all-female Brookstone Wild West Extravaganza, takes over management of the traveling show. In her new role, she has to work with both Wesley DeShazer, the man who once broke her heart, and Jason Adler, her financial partner. Soon, she finds herself torn between the two men.

Ella Fleming is fleeing a forced betrothal when she stows away on the Brookstone train. Lizzy finds her and gives her a job in the costume department, but Ella has a secret that could affect all of their lives, as well as the future of the Brookstone Extravaganza.

When Mary Reichert, a former sharpshooter for the show, learns that her brother, August, has been killed, she refuses to believe it was an accident. She returns to the show to find the truth, but is she seeking justice or vengeance?

As the three women work together to discover how August died, Lizzy strives to hold the show together. Can she keep the Brookstone Extravaganza alive without losing the desire of her heart?

Happy Friday! My first line is from “How the Light Gets In” by Jolina Petersheim:

“The caskets were closed, of course.”

  2. I am reading several. On my blog I highlighted The Heart’s Invisible Furies. I am also reading a cozy mystery called Chutes and Ladder by Marc Jedel. “What do you call a fly without wings?” No response, so I answered my own joke. “A walk.”

    Have a great day.

    • Lol. I don’t think I’ve heard of either one. I’m reading a few different ones right now myself but I stick to one fiction at a time for a physical book because I only listen to the audiobooks at work. Hope you have a great weekend!

  3. Happy Friday!

Today on my blog, I’m sharing the first paragraph from A Silken Thread by Kim Vogel Sawyer: https://christianfictiongirl.blog/2019/03/21/first-line-friday-80/. Currently I’m reading Ladies of Intrigue by Michelle Griep, so I’ll share a line from there.

“Mr. Farris and the soldiers thundered off, but despite the danger disappearing into the dark, Helen’s heart still beat an irregular tattoo, for Isaac strode toward her.”

Hope you have a great weekend. Happy reading! 🙂❤📚

  4. I love the cover! My first line comes from Plain Truth by Debby Giusti — Dr. Ella Jacobsen startled with fright as a crash of thunder shook her rural medical clinic.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  5. I have read a couple of Tracie Peterson’s novels and they are good. I absolutely love the cover! Here I will share the first line of the chapter I’m currently on in The Heaven Answer Book by Billy Graham. The question is: Will we grieve for lost loved ones when we are in Heaven? The first line of the answer is: In God’s glorious presence, all our concerns and griefs will be erased. Have a wonderful weekend!

I added that book to my Goodreads list – the historical aspect looks good. I haven’t read Tracie Peterson in a while but I’ve enjoyed her books before.

I agree with you. I enjoyed this one too (and am on the Celebrate Lit Tour with you). Have a fabulous weekend!

  8. That cover!! Happy Friday! I’m sharing from General Meade: A Novel of the Civil War by Robert Kofman on my blog, here’s the first line from the next book I’ll be starting, Beauty in Battle by Robin Patchen:

“Darkness swallowed Harper’s rental home even before Jack navigated his pickup around the corner.”

  9. Iola

This sounds like a fun story!

I’m sharing the first line from The King’s Mercy by Lori Benton on my blog today, and that’s what I’m currently reading. It’s my first Lori Benton book and I’ve heard great things about her writing, so I have high expectations!

Alex MacKinnon roused to the press of wood beneath his cheek and an ominous churning in his gut.

    Have a great weekend 🙂

  10. Paula Shreckhise

My first line is from chapter 20 of A Hero for Miss Hatherleigh by Carolyn Miller.

Today had proved a day of wonders, enough to make Caroline almost believe there might be other miracles to be seen from this God the Kirbys trusted.

  11. What a great first line! I’m very much looking forward to reading this one now!

On my blog I shared the opening line of Kristy Cambron’s Castle on the Rise:

“Fairy-tale weddings never included rain on the guest list.”
