No wonder Harley was angry. Never in Emma’s life had she wanted to hurt someone, not even Winston Meador, but at this moment, if Harley pointed to a guy and said, “That’s him,” Emma would pick up a stick and chase him down. She drummed her fingers and waited for Harley to get in the car. They both needed counseling. Brother Bob might be able to help her. No. Harley would come closer to trusting a female counselor.

Harley slammed the car door and fastened her seatbelt in slow motion.

Maybe Brother Bob could suggest someone, Emma thought, but then the answer came to her. Minnie. No one had a more sympathetic ear or more wisdom than her. Perhaps she could add lessons for the heart while teaching them to cook. Yes, she’d ask Minnie to help. They both needed to learn how to replace their anger and bitterness with Minnie’s joy. Emma smiled as she remembered Minnie’s words. Happiness is a choice. Only a foolish person chooses anything else, and I ain’t that.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Shelia Stovall is the director of a small-town library in southern Kentucky, where only strangers mention her last name, and the children call her Miss Shelia.

It tickles her to see shocked expressions when folks learn she’s traveling to Africa—again. She’s the worst missionary ever, but God continues to send her to the ends of the earth as He attempts to mold her into something useful.

Shelia is a country girl who relishes eating a bologna sandwich at a country store just as much as savoring an elegant meal in a posh restaurant.

Shelia and her husband Michael live on a farm, and she enjoys taking daily rambles to the creek with their three dogs. Spending time with family, especially her grandchildren, is her all-time favorite thing. The only hobby Shelia loves more than reading uplifting stories of hope is writing them.
