About the Book:

What happened to Brigitte Berthold?

That question has haunted Daniel Knight since he was thirteen, when he and eleven-year-old Brigitte escaped the Gestapo agents who arrested both their parents. They survived a harrowing journey from Germany to England, only to be separated upon their arrival. Daniel vowed to find Brigitte after the war, a promise he has fought to fulfill for more than seventy years.

Now a wealthy old man, Daniel’s final hope in finding Brigitte rests with Quenby Vaughn, an American journalist working in London. He believes Quenby’s tenacity to find missing people and her personal investment in a related WWII espionage story will help her succeed where previous investigators have failed. Though Quenby is wrestling her own demons–and wary at the idea of teaming up with Daniel’s lawyer, Lucas Hough–the lure of Brigitte’s story is too much to resist. Together, Quenby and Lucas delve deep into the past, following a trail of deception, sacrifice, and healing that could change all of their futures.

Review:
Wow do yourself a favor and start this book in the morning! And have a box of tissues nearby while you’re at it. This book had me hooked right from the first chapter. Quenby Vaughn is sought out to help in Daniel’s search for his long-lost friend Brigitte. With a painful past of her own, she has devoted herself to her work as a journalist and is surprised to find that her most recent story may have a connection to the one Daniel needs her help with. Over 70 years ago Daniel (then Dietmar) and his best friend Brigitte were separated during WWII while on the run from Germany to England. He has dedicated the rest of his life trying to find her, hoping she was able to survive the war as well.

Don’t expect to be able to read through this book without your heart being affected. Melanie Dobson has painted an emotional journey with unexpected intersections that will leave both tear stains down your cheeks and a smile on your face (although not necessarily at the same time). This was one of my “finished reading at 3am” books because I simply couldn’t bring myself to go to bed without knowing how it ended.

If you’re a fan of historical fiction that tugs at your heart, you’ll be sure to love this book. This book was selected to be one of the book club choices for a Christian Fiction group I’m a part of on Facebook and I’m so glad I took the recommendation to read it. I can’t recommend it enough myself! As I said in the beginning though, make sure you have time to read when you sit down because you won’t want to get up until you’re done, and the chapters are short enough the “one more chapter” mindset can leave you finishing the book in no time 😛
