ABOUT THE BOOK

Genre: Women’s Fiction
Are we the sum of our circumstances or is there … more?
In a debut novel readers are calling “true to life,” “captivating,” and “cleverly written,” author Beth Troy takes on the story of Lu Sokolowski and her life upended. Lu’s plans have turned sideways, taking her back to the family and town she always planned to leave.
Lu is a modern woman’s honest journey to faith, that unapologetically addresses:
•The big questions women ask about their beliefs.
•The struggles women face in creating a fulfilling life.
•The complexity of family relationships.
•The tension between hope and reality.
Lu is a story for readers looking for real growth in relatable characters who aren’t afraid to ask real questions. It’s for women who want to experience the full spectrum of who they are and what they believe. It’s for women who want a story about how faith integrates into the whole life of a woman. You will want to share this story with a friend – after you read it again yourself.
Do you have a favorite place to write? How about a favorite drink or snack while you work?
My favorite place to write is a basement room I reclaimed, ironically after I finished the draft for Lu! It’s a humble, windowless space with a cement floor I painted terracotta, paneled walls I painted in cream, and a dropped ceiling I painted haint blue. I live in a house of boys, so I store all of my favorite girly things here, including a crystal-esque chandelier I’d never get away with in another part of the house.
My favorite writing drink is coffee, though it should be water. Now that I’m thinking about it, I need to be drinking a whole lot more water.
What inspired you to write this story?
My inspiration came from my first walk down the Inspirational fiction aisle after I became a Christian. I was looking for a story that would help me make sense of this new life I’d discovered, and all I saw were covers of girls in bonnets and high-necked lacy collars. For a long time, I hoped someone would write a story about a girl a bit more modern, and after several years of waiting, I realized I would have to write that story.
Was there a character that you resonated with the most?
People always ask me if I’m Lu, but honestly, I’m probably more like her best friend, Gracie – juggling three kids along with whatever life is throwing at her.
Who was the most challenging character for you to write and why?
Lu’s ex-boyfriend, John. He’s introduced as the cheating boyfriend, but I never wanted that to be who he was so much as a bad choice he made. The readers weren’t prone to liking him, so writing him to encourage a second look and another chance made for some tricky persuasion.
What do you hope readers will take away from this story?
That God is real and deals with real people. How often do we think we have to get it all together to come into God’s presence? Too often, and it’s the antithesis of how salvation in Jesus Christ works.
What are you working on now?
The sequel to Lu, and it’s coming out this summer. I can’t wait for readers to see Lu through the rest of her story.
