Emma Mitchell may enjoy sprinkling romance into the lives of others, but her own plans involve a single first-class ticket to culinary school in Europe.

When her best friend, Jon Noble, suddenly moves back to Ransom, Emma’s fairly certain her life can’t get any better…until her matchmaking schemes nosedive, her culinary future falls flat, and a life-long friendship begins to teeter on the brink of something unexpected.

With a little inspiration from Jane Austen’s classic and a touch of Blue Ridge charm, will Jon and Emma discover that what they need the most may be the last thing they’re trying to find?

EXCERPT

A sudden sound, like a strange sort of “hello”, came from the hallway. Head held high as if he made a royal entrance, a beautiful cat sauntered into the room. His thick gray, brown, and white mingled fur spread over his body like an intricately designed fleece, and he hopped onto the couch with fluid movements. His gray-green gaze examined Jon with curious condescension.

“Oh, look! You finally get to meet Narnia face-to-face.” Emma set down her bottled water on the coffee table and pulled the cat up into her arms to bring him close for Jon’s examination. “Isn’t he pretty?”

“He is.” Jon stroked beneath the cat’s chin and Narnia’s lids closed in acceptance.

“I was talking about you.” Emma shot him a grin from her periphery. “And, clearly, Narnia agrees because he’s already purring for you.”

“And why did you choose the name Narnia? It’s certainly unique.”

“The name really chose him.” Narnia made a sound as if he was repeating his own name and Emma rested her forehead against his furry one. “First of all, I found him outside the restaurant sitting by a lamppost in the snow.” She looked up at Jon, those hazel eyes alight with unvoiced mirth. “And he talks. True Narnian animals talk, if you remember.”

Narnia took that opportunity to jump from Emma’s hold and slowly walk over to one of the floor-to-ceiling windows where a small dish of water stood next to a large Peace Lily. Jon gave the room another look, the previous awkward date-like feelings resurfacing. “The last time I saw this place, you still had boxes scattered everywhere, but you’ve really made it your home.”

“You say that like you’re surprised.” She sat down on the couch and pulled the popcorn close again.

“Yeah, well, for some reason I had a picture of a dorm room in my head instead of an apartment with a layout similar to mine.” He walked over to the window and peeked out at the quiet town as the lanterns lining the streets began to light with the coming evening. “Except mine’s a little bigger.”

“And probably lots more expensive.” She placed her feet up on the coffee table to reveal yellow duck slippers. “And, if you haven’t noticed, Mr. Observant, I’m not a little girl anymore.”

He gestured toward her slippers with a raised brow, but she conveniently ignored him. Yet her statement rang with truth he hadn’t prepared to face. Unexpected heat rose up the back of his neck. And definitely hadn’t expected to respond to…whatever this was.
